Perfect Aim but still MISS? This is why… | Pro Shooting Tips #8

picture this you’re on the range it’s a
gorgeous day there’s hardly any wind you line up your sights to the middle of that
bullseye you squeeze the trigger and you take a beautiful shot and you miss how
the heck did that happen when you think and you’re sure that you took a perfect
shot well don’t be so sure because there is a way that you can miss even though
your sights are lined up perfectly to the target in this video I’m going to
show you why you can miss even though your sights are perfectly aligned and of
course how to avoid it this is Kirsten joy Weiss and I might have burst your
bubble that a perfectly aligned shot does not always equal a perfectly centered
shot in the bullseye but don’t worry in this video obviously I’m going to show
you what to do what causes it and how to avoid it before we go any further this
teaching segment is made possible by the wargaming team who created the game
World of Tanks Warner Brothers partnered with them for Christopher
Nolan’s movie about Dunkirk I’m pretty excited about it so there will be more
on that at the end of the video but for now let’s keep going now why is it that
you can have a seemingly perfect shot yet still miss the target
well it might have to do with something that most shooters don’t even think
about and that is gun cant what’s gun cant that’s when you tilt
the gun either right or left from your center line of how you originally
sighted in your gun if you tilt your gun to the left or the right after being
sighted with it perfectly vertical it will displace the bullet sometimes by a
few inches sometimes by a few feet so you want to pay attention
now take a rifle for example with a scope mounted on top now this can happen
with other guns and this can happen with iron sights but a scope is going to be a
better visual for you to understand this concept now you sighted in vertically with
the scope mounted vertically now what the scope does is it actually
compensates for the elevation of the trajectory of a bullet well what does
that mean not everybody knows that a bullet does not slide straight it
actually has a trajectory that sort of lobs into the target now an exaggerated
visual for this would be a cannon or a tank where they’re shooting their
projectiles and they’re moving and they have to lob that into the target if
they just shoot straight it’s going to go right into the ground is going to
lob and go “phht” its not going to make it because we live on a planet with gravity and
gravity will affect the projectile so it’s the same concept with a bullet it’s just
not as exaggerated but it still matters your bullet goes like this and your
sights actually point down towards the target so you’re essentially like a
cannon or a tank lifting the end of your barrel up so it lobs that round into the
target so you have this crossed line where the point of impact meets your
scope crosshairs and it’s just this perfect little marriage between the two
but when you tilt it that’s where you get problems if you start tilting your
gun to the right tilt your gun to the right like that your bullet is actually
going to go low and to the right if you tilt your gun to the left it’s going to
go low and to the left why is this well because instead of going now you’re
you’re actually tilting on a pivot point basically when you lob that the
trajectory is now no longer that scope is no longer compensating for that
trajectory completely [ Scope no longer compensates for gravity the same essentially acts as a windage error] now a few things that exaggerate this is if you mount the
optics very high the higher the optic the more this tilt is going to affect
your shot and also if you are shooting at a long distance
everything is exaggerated or if you’re shooting 22 precision at 50 meters it’s
all very exaggerated as well pistol it’s a good thing to remember this but it’s
not as essential because most pistol distances are very close compared to
rifle distances so you don’t have to worry unless you’re
doing say long range longer ranges of pistol so it has a lot to do with the
size round you have and has a lot to do with the distance the size of
your target the distance your targets at [ballistics, round weight, velocity, precision required, etc] there’s a lot of different factors and
so in order to not confuse you we’re going to move on to how to fix this
problem so how do you avoid this little mistake
that adds up to big problems well we stay consistent that’s pretty
much the key with everything with shooting stay consistent you set your
rifle vertically keep the rifle vertically if you set your rifle with
a cant because some shooters cant the rifle into themselves in order to keep
the rifle into their body zone they need to stay consistent too because if they
start canting then it’s going to be all messed up
most people think well I’ll just line up the reticle to the horizon and then I
know that I’m consistent well even a one degree tilt left or right can affect the
shot does affect the shot it just depends on what you’re after so if you
have something down range you know is straight great but if you don’t like
most people then it’s a problem the best way to do it is really to use a bubble
level and that’s something that they use in building where they’re trying to get
something plumb and they use this little spirit level bubble level also used in
photography and shooting and there’s a whole bunch of options for this and
maybe I’ll put some in the description but just find what works for you and
what works best for your setup that’s going to be your best option you want to
keep that shooter error that human error you want to shrink it down and shrink it
down and shrink it down until you know that there’s a not a lot of factors that
are going to make you miss when there’s other factors you can’t control added
into your shooting like wind you’re going to thank me so what’s causing you
to miss even though it looks like you made a perfect shot it could be gun
cant so be careful about how you’re tilting that gun even if it’s a
centimeter off depending on what you’re after that can mean the difference
between making your shot and missing your shot so I hope that you enjoyed
this tip and that I made you a better shooter if you have a friend who might
enjoy this as well please share it with them because it’s always more fun to
shoot when you know how to shoot before you go I want to tell you a little bit
about World of Tanks and Warner Brothers
Christopher Nolan’s movie about Dunkirk and I can’t wait to watch this movie you
hear about Dunkirk if you know anything about World War two but you don’t know
the stories behind it and how miraculous this really was one of the biggest
evacuations of military history there were heroes rallied up their boats they
were yachts and fishermen and that enthusiastically went to rescue these
troops that were stranded on this beach by the Germans
if these troops had not been evacuated the war could have ended quite
differently in World War two technology and the vehicles of the time really
decided a lot of the battles when you play World of Tanks you can actually
pick the different tanks of world war two and I’m a secret gamer so it’s
really exciting as well you can actually get into tanks and roleplay and
strategize it’s so involved it’s tons of gameplay it’s a hundred and fifty
million people online playing this and 450 tanks so you’re going to find
something you like so check out the description of this video for links to
all of that and also a code that allows the first 300 people that sign up seven
days of premium time, a premium tank and a bunch of gold
who doesn’t love gold so that’s a good way to get started check out the game
see if you like it see if it’s up to par honoring World War two its
important and it just generates interest and we remember the heroes of that day
so thanks so much for joining me aim true and happy shooting can’t can
affect – cant can – so special tanks to the world of tanks I want to say a
special tanks to the world of tanks okay

    You hit my heart perfect

  2. BFF April 28, 2019 at 2:19 am

For my long distance rifle I blocked it used a level with deviation of 0.0005, then mounted my scope and set with same level.
While shooting I hold my rifle until the vertical reticle is going up and down on the target, cant gone. Then I hold the horizontal pause breathing while squeezing.
When I cant with pistol or long gun I know when I squeeze if I am canted.
I also reload and collect data. Reloads greatly reduce the differences in finished ammunition.

It's important that a shooter understand shooter/target analysis. It starts with follow through and calling the shot. Cant is not problematic when it's consistent and when it's at a determined distance, such as 200 yard sitting in High Power Rifle Competition. Bottom-line is calling the shot is the way to understanding the cause of shooter error.

  4. 7033Joe April 29, 2019 at 10:33 am

Having trouble balancing your rifle to zero? Can't mount a level on your scope? Not a problem! Just use a level when you set up your target. It's ideal that you'd use a target with a cross hair. So you can use your horizontal or vertical crosshairs on your scope to overlap the crosshair on the target. You're welcome.

I consider myself a pretty good shooter and I just learned something . Thank you, great visuals, I always avoided using the bubble levels that come with some optics. Thanks!

  6. KG April 29, 2019 at 10:27 pm

How did that not occur to me? I learned that little nugget about how the sights work long ago. SMH. Oh, well, not really my issue but something to remember.

  7. Scott Butts April 30, 2019 at 6:45 pm

    what shot?

  8. MichaelAussie05 May 1, 2019 at 2:49 am

Archery scopes have a spirit level built into them I find it strange that rifles don't.

  9. shuumai May 1, 2019 at 4:12 am

Trying to learn to get my rifle and scope level. Maybe this is one area in which being overly detailed oriented might actually help me!

  10. Duncan Sands May 1, 2019 at 8:49 pm

Kirsten; I hold my breath when i shoot; i find any vibration affects me hitting the target!!

  11. Ass Poes May 1, 2019 at 9:25 pm

Neolithic children knew these things through common sense, they weren't under the impression that they could hit something with a stone at 20 meters by throwing it straight at their target they also learnt that if they leaned while throwing that they would miss horribly.
It is scary that the notion exists that gun owners would need these tips in 2019 when cavemen had already figured it out or had the natural instinct as with figuring out the right trajectory to play gravity.
    Shocking.

I have old photos ( 1 photo is tin), letters and military records, from a Warren Edwin hill back from 1942, I found them while cleaning out my in-laws attic. They were under insulation for years. My in-laws do not know who the man was, so I have kept them for over 10 years now. I would like to return them to his family, I've tried for many years to find them (the family of Mr. Hill) but always came up short. If anyone can actually help that would be awesome.

On long distance shots you also have to take in consideration the spin of the Earth. It does effect the traveling of the bullet.

  31. Pho8os May 29, 2019 at 12:49 pm

Thank you, Kirsten for the great video. I was wondering if you have done any target shooting with a crossbow or bow? I would love to hear your perspective of them?

  32. Gun Runner June 1, 2019 at 6:23 pm

I was just going to say your scope isnt zeroed, but your explanation was better.

  33. F De Mascio June 2, 2019 at 12:25 pm

Great explanation of cant. It was my biggest issue on the range in the Corps. I know it was the culprit in most of my dropped points.
    Dunkirk was awesome.
    As was Churchill.

  34. 2fathomsdeeper June 2, 2019 at 6:20 pm

For me, it's usually pellet skirt damage, leading of the bore, or dieseling.  Otherwise, I snap twigs at 50 yards.  When you get a can of pellets, spend the time to organize them in layers so they don't bang together much.  Never shake a can of pellets!  A leaded bore will turn a accurate gun into a fart in thy general direction.  Dieseling can make the velocity erratic, and can take a pellet that's supposed to travel 1000 fps, and push it up over the sound barrier.  You can even note a flash on a suppressed air rifle.  Normally, I see smoke in the bore from skin oils that dieseled during the shot.  Keep the bore dry as possible!

  35. Pankaj Vaishnav June 3, 2019 at 9:40 am

I don't understand perfectly. You are telling oral if you are use animation than everyone understands very well. Just I trying to suggest you. Don't mind.

  40. John McJunkin June 10, 2019 at 4:28 am

I was about to go to the rifle range tomorrow…but instead I think I'll just dust off all of my college books on math, and science…geez. Let's see now….carry the one, add the 4…divided by the wind speed squared….minus the trajectory…carry the 3….multiplied by the temperature of the day…..compounded by the distance and time displacement………….awww, now I have to start all over again….let's see here….1 and 1 equals 2……uh…2 plus 2 equals 4….oh why didn't I pay more attention in school…..my head hurts now…..lol.

  44. Ancient Mariner June 20, 2019 at 8:27 pm

    Kirsten,
In your personal experience, is it better for someone to shoot an inch too short, or an inch too long?

  45. Bear up June 21, 2019 at 8:35 am

    Commonly called ark or fire

  46. leeroyphillips June 24, 2019 at 9:42 pm

    What a beautiful lady

  47. Patrick June 25, 2019 at 10:56 pm

Just a terminology correction. Builders levels are used most often to assure things are "level" or perfectly horizontal.
Finish carpenters use them more often to make things "plumb" or perfectly vertical. The longer the level, the more accurate it will be and it may have more than one vial for level or plumb. If you draw a centerline on the butt stock that would help in keeping the rifle from canting when installing the optics. As you suggested, if the rifle is canted when sighted in, you must maintain the same cant for it to shoot to the sight picture. Then you hand the rifle to your buddy who can't get it to shoot straight either….. Nice explanation!

  48. raymond wandell June 26, 2019 at 1:26 pm

Easy to miss when distracted by super hot girl on range.

  49. Chris Clark June 27, 2019 at 11:54 pm

Would like to see one like this for pistol shooting. Why you miss and how to correct it.

  50. windowgecko June 28, 2019 at 12:18 am

Thanks Kirsten, I thought I was a decent shooter. Now after this explanation, I will be….

  51. John D June 29, 2019 at 6:04 am

Canting is critical. A few others are just as critical. Starring at the target will cause a ghost image in your eye like looking at a very bright light. Heart beat timing is also critical. You want to time your heart beat so you fire between heart beats. One that is always overlooked is body alignment to your target. Get in your shooting stance or position, aim in on your target and close your eyes for 3 seconds and open your eyes to see if your sights have drifted. Don't move the rifle back on target! Move your whole body until your sights line back up on target and close your eyes again for another 3 seconds. Keep doing the body alignment until your sights don't drift off target. Once everything is dead on and you have no burnt image of the target in your eye, you should be able to knock the X out of the target repetitively until you leave your position. Train yourself until all I described becomes second nature where everything becomes automatically for you. You will be hard to beat if you know your rifle and comfortable with it.

  52. Mathew Knight July 1, 2019 at 1:59 pm

Bullet drop, sights compensate for vertical bullet drop. If you know how long your bullet is in flight you can work out your bullet drop quite accurately which is why it can be compensated for by sight. Don't horses cant?

  53. Mandatory Carry July 2, 2019 at 1:03 am

I thought it was because I suck.
Probably still is, but something to consider.

  54. Cyrus Freeman July 2, 2019 at 4:19 am

There are way too few videos on HOW to shoot. Thank you for making one.

  55. Lee Hyson July 4, 2019 at 1:11 am

Very interesting and infornative. I feel a bit better about missing the bulls eyes now, lol. No more canting. Thank you.

  60. Michael Bishop July 5, 2019 at 1:47 am

Great tip! It would be nice if scopes had a built-in level.

  61. PetesNikon July 6, 2019 at 7:49 pm

I was skeptical at first, but she's right. What really did it was the picture of sights and the bullet lobbing down range,

  62. Ray Williams July 8, 2019 at 4:20 pm

Subbed just on the fact that you shoot while doing Yoga!

  63. Makgabo Mathato July 9, 2019 at 6:17 pm

  64. Chris White July 16, 2019 at 6:48 am

I bet there are a lot of viewers who would like to land a shot in your bullseye

  65. apolytikion July 16, 2019 at 7:34 pm

I went to the gun range today after a long time. I brought an old colt IV series 80 .46 m1911 and my sig p320 9mm. I don't know why but I had more center shots with the 1911 than the sig. Infact sometimes I totally missed with the sig 🙁 I wish I recorded myself when I got a bullseye so I know what to do next time. I'm really excited to go again but I was a bit disheartened when I couldn't get my shots on target as much as I would have liked.

  84. Shazam Shazamski July 27, 2019 at 5:14 pm

That is a very good point. Can't is fairly easy to overlook.
Other thing I found is shooters focus on the target and not the reticle.
In my experience, most people "think" they fired a clean shot but they actually slightly jerked the trigger. Especially with new shooters thinking that a 1lb trigger pull will improve their groups.
