HOW TO BUILD A WORDPRESS WEBSITE on GoDaddy: MAKE A WEBSITE on a Budget in 2020 (4 EASY STEPS)

Are you wondering how to get your WordPress website set up? Well in today’s video I’m going to share with you how easy it is
to get your WordPress website set up in about 20 minutes and all for just $1 a
month. Are you ready to get started? Then let’s go! I want to welcome you to
the WordPress Made Easy Show. I’m your host Jennifer Franklin and I help
entrepreneurs create and grow their WordPress websites quickly without
stressing out over design or tech. In today’s video I’m going to make it super simple for you to get your WordPress website set up in just four easy steps. They
are: one, choose your domain name; two, sign up for GoDaddy hosting; third, set up
WordPress; and four, go live. We’re going to go ahead and get started with step one
choose your domain name and sign up for GoDaddy.
We’re going to go ahead and get both of these steps completed at the same time.
All right I’ll give you a minute here. I want you to hit pause and I want you to
scroll down to the description below and click on that link. That’s going to apply
the $1.00 per month hosting plus a free GoDaddy domain so that we can get you
set up for just $1.00 a month. So go ahead pause this video, scroll down
and click the link and then come back and pick up where we left off. Alright so
if you clicked on that link below in the description you will come to GoDaddy’s
site. It looks like this. And it will say at the top: “your discount code has been
applied.” Now at any point if this discount code becomes not usable then
I’ll replace it with a new code in the description below. So just know that
whatever code it is will be refreshed so that we can get you the best discount
available. What you are going to want to do is go ahead and click on GET STARTED. Good
news! You get a free domain with this order. So let’s go ahead and type in
the .com of the domain name that we want with our website. Once you find a
combination of a domain name that is available, you can go ahead and click on
SELECT AND CONTINUE. We are going to go ahead
and you’re going to want to create an account over on the left hand side. So in
here you will enter your email and then a username and password. This is the
username and password that you will use to login to your GoDaddy account in the
future, so you’re going to want to write that down. Next, click on CREATE ACCOUNT once you’ve entered all that information in and then over on the right hand side you just want to check and make sure that we
have all of the correct information selected. In order to get the promo
applied, we will need to order for twelve months. This is the Basic Managed
WordPress Website Bundle. They actually give you a email free for
twelve months so you can set that up with your domain name. You want to make
sure that your business domain name is spelled correctly. So here I have
businessnameshirts.com, my awesome domain name. And that is selected for one
year and you’ll notice that it will renew in one year at $17.99,
but today you’re getting it for free. If you keep scrolling you can select
here to add domain privacy. That’s $9.99 per year per domain. And that just means
that when anyone can look up your website domain name to see who owns it
instead of it being your name and address and phone number
GoDaddy will use theirs instead. OK, so that was step one where I showed you how
to create your domain name and step two we set up our GoDaddy hosting account.
I want you to go ahead and click pause on the video here so that you can go
ahead and complete your billing and payment for your domain name and hosting. Okay, hit pause and I’ll meet you back here in just a second. Welcome back! Now
we’re ready for step three which is to set up WordPress. GoDaddy should have
sent you a couple emails: one was to confirm that you created an account with
GoDaddy, they sent you a receipt for your purchase,
and third they should send you an email telling you how to get started with
setting up your managed WordPress GoDaddy hosting account. I want you to go ahead and confirm your account with GoDaddy and then click on the link to go ahead and get your
WordPress set up. You should already be logged into GoDaddy and when you click
on the link in your email it will take you to the product page for managed
WordPress. This is the hosting where your WordPress website is going to live and
you’re going to want to click on SET UP over on the right hand side. Now once you
get here this changes a lot so if yours doesn’t look exactly like this (it
should look pretty similar), but GoDaddy sometimes changes
their interface so it may look a little different for you. Now there’s some
options here of how to get started with your WordPress website. So today we’re
creating a brand new WordPress website so we won’t need to migrate an existing
WordPress website. We can either easily build a website
together using the already installed templates provided by GoDaddy or we can
choose another way to use our WordPress plan which would be to set up our
WordPress manually, but for today’s video since we’re all about keeping things
easy I’m going to go ahead and click on VIEW TEMPLATES. Now once you’ve arrived on the view templates page you’re going to be able to choose from a number of
already designed website templates. This is going to give you a great starting
point for your WordPress website. They all look beautiful and are
professionally designed so you have a great starting point for your website.
For today’s website I’m just going to go ahead and choose a template from the
featured list. Over here on the right-hand side you can take a preview
by just clicking on the little eyeball and we can see what the Bento template
looks like on desktop, tablet and mobile. That looks really nice! Once you’ve found
a template that you like, go ahead and click on USE THIS TEMPLATE. For this
example we’re going to provide information about
our business and we’re going to write blog posts. Down at the bottom where it says, “one last thing – what do you want the public author name to be for your website?” This is going to be the username of your WordPress website. I just went ahead
and used all lowercase and just used my first and last name. You could also
choose to use your business name, all one word, and then once you’re satisfied with
that go ahead and click CONTINUE. You want to go ahead and confirm your
location and then GoDaddy will select the data center that is closest to you.
I’m going to click right here in North America. And then click CONTINUE. Now this is
great news! Creating your site… this can take a few minutes… How are you guys doing out there? Are you still with me? Well I hope so. I hope you’re getting a
lot of value out of this video so far. We have covered a lot in just a really
short time: I showed you how to choose your domain name, how to sign up for
GoDaddy hosting and we’re working on getting WordPress set up right now. There is a lot going on and you guys are hanging with me and we’re going to get
through this really fast so that you can get your WordPress website set up in no
time. If you’re getting a lot of value out
of this video, go ahead and hit the LIKE button below and if you have any questions
along the way, be sure to leave me a COMMENT because I do read all the
comments and try to get back to each and every one of you. Let’s head back to
GoDaddy and see how our WordPress website setup is coming along. Congrats
your site is ready! Next up, check it out and start editing. So from here we can
either click on CHECKOUT SITE and this will take us to the front end of our
WordPress website to see what it looks like
or we can click on EXPLORE DASHBOARD and this will take us to the backend of our
website to begin the editing process. So first let’s click on CHECKOUT SITE
and we can see what our WordPress website looks like. And here it is! Now
you’ll notice that up in the left hand corner
GoDaddy is going to give us a few tips to walk through our website for the first
time. So it tells us where up here in the left hand corner is our dashboard where
we will install plugins and manage our users. The next tip it tells us where up in the
NEW section we can add a blog post or page. If you’re new to WordPress
you’re going to want to go through those tips to give you some helpful insights
into your WordPress website. Now let’s take a quick look and everything looks
really great and clean. I absolutely love it! That was so easy so so far we are moving right along. Now if we click on EXPLORE DASHBOARD it will take us to the dashboard. Another way to get to our
dashboard is up in the left hand corner it says MY DASHBOARD. Click
on that and that will take us to the backend of our WordPress website. Let’s
start out by walking through some of the settings that we should do right away
when we first set up our WordPress website. So the first thing I want you to
do is to go to POSTS. Now posts are where you would create new blog posts.
So here there is just a sample post and I’m going to ahead and delete that
because I’m going to start out fresh. I’m going to delete any content that I don’t
need. The next section is MEDIA. This is where you will add new images to your
WordPress website. So you can go here to search and locate all of your images on
your WordPress website. The next section is PAGES. Here is a link to all the pages
that you have installed on your website. The next section is APPEARANCE. Now what this is is all the themes that are available for your WordPress website.
WordPress automatically installs 2019, 2017, 2016 and so on, 2020 and at this
point we are using this theme right here. It says active. So this is the theme
that we have installed. We installed that when we selected our template through
GoDaddy’s step by step process. So what we can do here is we can go ahead and
delete these extra themes because we don’t need them and they’re just taking
up space. So delete those for now and that looks good. There are some sections
here like CUSTOMIZE (that’s how you customize your website), your MENUS and
BACKGROUND, the THEME EDITOR: so that’s where you’re going to kind of do some
overall customizing of your website. PLUGINS are software that you can install to give your WordPress website additional functionality and these are
the ones that GoDaddy thinks that your website needs to get started.
And so you can see here that this one is not activated, but you can definitely
activate it. If you want to add a new plugin, you would just go up and
click on ADD NEW and then either search from the WordPress repository for
available plugins or you can click here to upload your own that you download. Now remember in the beginning when we set up our username? This is where you will
access your username. So if you click on EDIT, I can edit how my username appears
to the public. So right down here it says nickname. I can type out my actual name
with capital letters and a space and then choose to display my name publicly as
that name. I’m going to show you in settings a few things that we need to
make sure that are set up correctly. So we’ll click on SETTINGS. So at the top
you’re going to want to include your site title and this is just where you
would put your business name. In this example, I’m just going to use my name and then a tagline to explain what your website is about and then we’re going to scroll
down. And everything looks so good. You can
choose how you want the date formatted and then what timezone you are in. So you
can choose here what time zone you’re in and then make sure you hit SAVE CHANGES. Next let’s check SETTINGS>READING. Your homepage is going to display as
your home page, which is the “HOME” page. so you can choose what
page you want on the front page now if page you want on the front page. If you want your blog posts to appear on the front page, then you would click here, “your latest posts” and then your blog
page would be your home page. We’re going to leave that set as it is, but before we go
here’s one thing I want you to know. This is very important, so lean in. Where it
says SEARCH ENGINE VISIBILITY, you are going to want to UNCHECK this once your
site is live because right now WordPress is telling search engines NOT
to index your site by having this checked. You’re going to want to come
back here once your website is live and uncheck this box. So I want you to go
ahead and make a note of that right now to come back here and uncheck that box.
Another important step is to make sure that on your PERMALINK settings that you
have this selected to post name. This is going to give each of your new pages and
posts an easy to read URL. How are you guys doing so far? Are you still with me?
So far we have gone ahead and we have chosen our domain name, we have signed up for GoDaddy hosting, we are working on getting our WordPress website set up and
so far we have gone through all the settings in the backend of our dashboard
and now we’re ready to customize the front-end of our website to give it your
branding and design. Are you ready? Let’s head back over to the website and take a
look at the front-end. In order to customize the front end of your website
we’re going to head down to APPEARANCE and click on CUSTOMIZE. This is going to open
up our WordPress customizer and the neat part here is that you’re going to be
able to see all the changes taking place on the front end of your website. I
want you to go ahead and take some time to click through each one of these and
upload and enter in the information according to your business. Make sure
once you’ve made all of your changes to hit PUBLISH so that all of your changes
take effect. Are you guys still with me? So in that section I showed you how to
customize your WordPress website using the customizer. Now I’m sure you’re probably
wondering how to edit the individual pages so let’s head back over to our
website and I’m going to show you how to edit each of your individual pages with
your content. Here we are back on the home screen and I’m going to show you
how to edit the individual pages. So at the top of the page, you can just simply
click on EDIT PAGE and this will open up the page editor. Now the page editor
that we’re using here is just the Gutenberg editor which uses a block
system. So at the top here is your page title. And the next section is the home
page, the header image. If you click on this EDIT IMAGE button, it will allow you
to upload a new image from your media library. Once you’ve made all of the
changes that you want to this page, be sure to click on the UPDATE button in
the top right hand corner to make sure your changes take effect. In this video
I’m not going to get too much into how to use the Gutenberg editor. if you notice
over on the left hand side there is a link to video tutorials. If you’re using
GoDaddy hosting, they automatically give you access to video tutorials right in
your dashboard. You guys are amazing! We have covered a lot of ground in just a
short time: we have chosen your domain name, we have signed up for GoDaddy
hosting, we have set up your WordPress website, and now we are ready to go live!
Let’s head back over to our WordPress dashboard and I’m going to show
you how easy it is to get your website live out into the world. Back over on your WordPress dashboard, I want you to scroll down to SETTINGS and GENERAL and at the very top there is
a note and it says, “your site is using” and then it will give you your temporary
domain name provided by GoDaddy and then it asks you, “did you want to use your domain?” And so we’re going to go ahead and click yes and ADD DOMAIN. This is going to open up Go Daddy’s page and assuming you’re still logged into GoDaddy, it’s going to ask you, “which domain do you want to use?” So where it says, “choose a
domain,” you’ll just go ahead and click on the arrow to choose from your list of
domains that are available. Once you do that, you’re going to click ATTACH. Once you click on attach, GoDaddy will go ahead and set your domain DNS settings so that
your website is now live. One thing to know is that it can take up to 48 hours
for your domain name to propagate across the web, so don’t worry if your website
isn’t live right away. Thank you so much for watching! In today’s video, I share
with you how easy it is to create your WordPress website on GoDaddy in just
four easy steps.
